Who Can Benefit from Speech Therapy?

Adults with Communication Problems

“My father had a stroke. He was in the hospital for two weeks and the doctor told me he had a bleed inside his brain. His speech was slurred and he had trouble understanding us. He didn’t want to be with other people. The SLP started working with him. He’s understanding and talking more, and I am thankful he is getting better a little bit at a time. “

Adults with Cognitive Problems

“My wife was deployed and got a severe brain injury from a blast. Her body recovered and she can walk now, but she still has trouble thinking and talking. She started working with an SLP and it has really helped. She is learning ways to keep track of information. Her memory is better and she can think of the words she wants to say. She is enjoying her friends and family more. I’m slowly getting my wife back”.

Adults with Swallowing Problems

“After my stroke, I wasn’t able to eat regular food. It was so bad that I needed to have a feeding tube to give me some nutrition. I worked with one SLP in the hospital and then another once I went home.
First, I started eating soft foods, then worked my way up to food I could chew. Now I don’t need the tube, and I can eat almost anything. I still have to take my time, but I am so glad to be eating again.”
